“Does journalism have a future?” is the topic of an online panel held this Friday, October 11, at 9 a.m. by the National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD). Participants include Pedro Dória, a journalist with 30 years of experience who founded and edits Canal Meio, and professors Lia Seixas and Suzana Barbosa of the Faculty of Communication (Facom) at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). Journalist Magali Moser, a postdoctoral researcher at INCT.DD, will moderate the panel, which will be broadcast on YouTube.
While digital transformation and new tools such as artificial intelligence promise to reinvent journalism, economic, structural, and ethical problems threaten the profession. In this context, the panel will discuss the main challenges facing professional journalism and its business model, newsroom sustainability, and how to ensure information quality.
The debate also aims to highlight journalism’s role in democracy in a political context of strong polarization, radicalization, and extremism, alongside widespread disinformation. The event is a partnership between INCT.DD and UFBA’s Graduate Program in Contemporary Communication and Culture (PósCom).
About the guests
With more than 30 years in journalism, Pedro Dória writes about politics and technology and has published eight books. He has worked for leading Brazilian news outlets and founded Canal Meio. Also taking part are Professor Lia Seixas, coordinator of the Center for Journalism Studies and a permanent member of the Laboratoire de Pratiques et Identités Journalistiques (Lapij) at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), and Professor Suzana Barbosa, leader of the Online Journalism Research Group and the #AcesseJOR project.
