The National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) has released the e-book “Eleições Municipais em Rede: o contexto digital em 2020” (Networked Municipal Elections: the digital context in 2020). The publication brings together researchers, groups, and institutions from different Brazilian regions within the INCT.DD research network. It provides an analytical and empirical overview of that year’s municipal elections, focusing on online platforms. It examines how institutional and non-institutional actors operated in these environments from the perspectives of candidates, parties, political leaders, activists, and campaign professionals. The editors are Camilo Aggio (UFMG), Fernanda Cavassana (UFPR), and Michele Massuchin (UFPR).
Alongside discussion of the 2020 election in online environments during the pandemic, the publication aims to expand studies of local power. It also offers an empirical view of digital phenomena in campaigns, reflecting efforts to explore different objects of study and analytical perspectives.
The book grew out of discussions in INCT.DD’s “Politics in digital environments” group, which meets each year during the institute’s congress to discuss its research. The book is part of an INCT.DD series on the internet and elections in Brazil. The series presents advanced research on different dimensions of the social and political dynamics that take place online during election periods. The first publication, released in 2021 as “Impactos político-comunicacionais nas eleições brasileiras de 2018” (Political and communication impacts in the 2018 Brazilian elections), was edited by Emerson Cervi (UFPR) and Maria Helena Weber (UFRGS). Another volume, devoted to the 2022 election, is planned for 2024.
