Graduate students from different fields of study can participate.
The National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) will hold the short course “Introduction to Data and Indicator Analysis with SPSS” from 26 to 29 May, 9 a.m.–noon, within the Graduate Program in Contemporary Communication and Culture (PósCom/UFBA). The course is intended for graduate students. Interested participants must register from 11 to 21 May using the form available HERE.
The course is free, and places are limited, with priority given to PósCom/UFBA students. Students from other graduate programs may also participate if places are available. There are no prerequisites or prior knowledge requirements. All selected participants will be contacted by email after registration closes.
The course
Taught by Professor Sivaldo Pereira of the University of Brasília (UnB), the short course provides practical training in descriptive statistics for academic research in applied humanities, especially communication, political science, and public policy. Over four days, participants will learn the foundations of data science, how to organize and structure datasets, and how to use SPSS to create, recode, and cross-tabulate variables.
With a practical approach, the final modules use real survey data and open government datasets. The aim is to develop analytical skills for research projects, scientific articles, master’s dissertations, doctoral theses, and technical reports.

The short course has a total workload of 15 hours, divided into four in-person sessions of three hours each and an additional online class to review content and answer questions after the practical activities. The in-person workshops will run from 26 to 29 May, 9 a.m.–noon, in the School of Communication (Facom/UFBA) building in Salvador (BA). Due to the practical nature of the activities, the course is limited to 20 participants.
About the instructor
He is a professor at the School of Communication (FAC) and the Graduate Program in Communication at the University of Brasília (UnB). He holds a PhD in Contemporary Communication and Culture from the Federal University of Bahia, with a doctoral research period at the University of Washington (USA). He completed postdoctoral research at the Center for Advanced Studies in Digital Democracy and Electronic Government (CEADD), Poscom-UFBA. He is a data scientist with experience in R, Python, Iramuteq, Power BI, and conversational design with Rasa/Python. He founded and coordinates the Center for Studies in Communication, Technology, and Politics (CTPol) research group and is an INCT.DD researcher.
