The National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) has opened registration for the advanced module of the Strategic Management of Online Election Campaigns course. The module has 20 class hours and takes place April 16–20, from 6:40 to 10 p.m., at the INCT.DD laboratory in the Faculty of Communication of the Federal University of Bahia (Facom-UFBA).
The advanced module is designed for professionals with more extensive experience in digital communication or those who have completed the intermediate module. It aims to provide deeper study of topics crucial to digital campaigns ahead of the 2018 election.
The course is a UFBA extension activity. Participants who attend at least 75% of classes will receive a certificate. Students are advised to bring laptops for practical activities. Our laboratory has workbenches, individual power outlets using the new standard, and Wi-Fi.
Prerequisite: Completion of the intermediate module or demonstrated experience in strategic communication in online environments.

April 16 – MONDAY: Why have we not yet had an online campaign in Brazil? Professor Wilson Gomes
This class examines the fundamental features of a fully digital campaign, the relationship between technological capacity and political planning, and the current campaign model based on computer intelligence, data analysis, and social media. It will summarize the barriers to adopting fully digital campaigns.
Wilson Gomes holds a PhD in Philosophy and is a full professor in UFBA’s Faculty of Communication and Graduate Program in Communication and Culture. He also coordinates the National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD), a network of associated laboratories involving 20 institutions and 50 Brazilian researchers in democracy and digital technologies.
April 17 – TUESDAY: Election campaigns and the strategic use of big data – Professor Lucas Reis
The class covers digital data extraction and network and semantic analysis with open-source platforms.
Lucas Reis is CEO of Zygon AdTech and a doctoral student in Communication at UFBA. He has experience in majoritarian and proportional election campaigns in different Brazilian states for candidates from parties including PCdoB, MDB, DEM, PSB, PV, and PSC.
April 18 and 19 – WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY: Intelligence and data analysis in online campaigns – Professor Júnia Ortiz
This theoretical and practical course discusses the importance of intelligence work in managing online campaigns. It offers a broad view of the research process and the challenge of turning data into information. It presents tools and basic statistical analysis concepts to train professionals to analyze online data.
Júnia Ortiz holds a PhD in Contemporary Communication and Culture from the Federal University of Bahia (PosCom/UFBA), with a doctoral research placement at MIT Comparative Media Studies through the CAPES/Fulbright program (2014–2015). She is a postdoctoral researcher funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), and a member of the Research Group on Critical Analysis of Media and Media Products (Analítica/UFBA). As an intelligence analyst at Zygon Digital, she analyzes programmatic media data for clients including the governments of Bahia and Ceará, Salvador City Hall, Banco do Estado de Sergipe (Banese), Desenbahia, Fieb/SENAI, and Sebrae.
April 20 – FRIDAY: Data-driven content: content automation – Professor Lucas Reis
Inbound marketing methods applied to campaigns. Personas, lead generation, and automated lead-nurturing workflows during election periods.
