The #MUSEUdeMEMES Symposium and Exhibition is a transdisciplinary academic event. It combines a symposium from 29 to 31 May 2019, from 09:00 to 21:00, with an exhibition opening on 18 May. Both take place at the Museum of the Republic (Catete Palace), Rio de Janeiro. The central theme of the first edition is “The Politics of Memes and the Memes of Politics.” The lectures will examine internet memes, their political uses, the humor behind them, their inherent participatory culture, and more. Thematic seminars, with calls for paper submissions, will promote discussions of research in progress by graduate researchers. The event also includes workshops on the language of memes, aimed primarily at school teachers and students.
Research on internet memes has gained importance over the past fifteen years, drawing on perspectives and contributions from different fields. The symposium and exhibition offer an opportunity to discuss this research and present advances in the field to the wider public.
The #MUSEUdeMEMES Symposium and Exhibition is organized by Fluminense Federal University, through the Research Laboratory on Communication, Political Cultures and the Collaborative Economy (coLAB), and by the Museum of the Republic, with sponsorship from Capes and CNPq. The event also has institutional support from the National Institute of Science and Technology in Digital Democracy (INCT.DD), Fluminense Federal University’s Graduate Program in Communication (PPGCOM-UFF), and the Brazilian Institute of Museums (IBRAM).
